posies

2015 | ongoing

I've long been fascinated by the Victorian-era language of flowers: the tradition of using specific flowers or combinations of flowers to communicate messages to friends and loved ones. One of my favorite used bookstore finds is a facsimile edition of Kate Greenway's 1884 The Illuminated Language of Flowers. This series of posies, or small bouquets, is my contribution to the tradition, and each one is meant to communicate a specific message. More posies will be added soon. You can also see works in progress on Instagram (@kiraofthesea).

quiet magic series

2009 - 2011

Each piece in this series began as a monoprint incorporating fragments of plants from my garden and grew into a drawing with the layering of watercolor pencil imagery atop water-based inks.
